Kola Digital Herbarium

About

The KPABG Herbarium began to develop in the botanical garden's early years. Its official opening was in 1939. Based on the number of specimens, the KPABG Herbarium is among the twenty largest herbaria in the Russian Federation, registered in the international Index Herbariorum system. The total collection size is approximately 150,000 specimens.

The majority of the collection consists of plants from the Murmansk Region. A significant number of liverwort specimens from various regions of Eurasia and North America are represented; the herbarium contains the largest liverwort collection in Russia. The herbarium also contains a large number of bryophyte and lichen specimens from Spitsbergen. The scientific value of the KPABG Herbarium is the result of many years of teamwork; its rich collections accurately reflect more than 70 years of vegetation development in the Murmansk Region. The Herbarium houses specimens from other regions of Russia and countries near and far abroad (Karelia, Leningrad Oblast, Altai, the Caucasus, Kamchatka, the Polar Urals, Taimyr, the Far East, Spitsbergen, Europe, the USA, Canada, and others).

Since 2017, the KPABG Herbarium has been designated a Unique Scientific Facility and included in the UAS Register.
